The 2007 Vintage Passenger Ship Census
Compiled by Doug Newman
Updated: April, 2007The 2007 Vintage Passenger Ship Census is a list of all ships currently extant and known to the author that:
Are at least 30 years old (built 1977 or earlier);
Are over 1,000 gross tons;
Have overnight accommodation for at least thirteen passengers;
Are engine-powered (but may also have sails);
Are not limited to rivers, and Do not have a roll-on, roll-off car deck.The following information is included for each vessel, where applicable:
Current Name; IMO Number; Year; Tonnage; Passenger Capacity; Country of Build; Flag; Propulsion Type; Owner/Operator; Status; Former Names
Countries of build and registry are noted in standard ISO 3166 two-letter codes. You can view the entire list on the ISO website if you are not familiar with these. Propulsion types are noted as follows: S = Sail, D = Diesel, E = Diesel-Electric, T = Steam Turbine, R = Steam Reciprocating. A vessel may have more than one propulsion type, e.g. SD for a vessel with both sails and diesel engine(s). Links to the owner/operator web site(s) are included where available. Finally, if there is an article here on Maritime Matters about a particular ship, I have included a link to that article at the end of the ship's listing.
References for compiling this list have included Arnold Kludas' Great Passenger Ships (Patrick Stephens Ltd., 1992), William Mayes' Cruise Ships (Overview Press, 2005), the Equasis and Fakta om Fartyg web sites, the web sites of the ships' owners and operators, and those of their classification societies.
I would also like to thank all the friends around the world who have helped with this list both this year and in the past by letting me know about ships I've forgotten and by verifying the accuracy of the information.
I'd also like to give a very big "thank you" to Maritime Matters Editor Martin Cox for publishing this list for the past three years. It is an honor to be able to contribute to this wonderful site.
Finally, please note that while I have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of the information in this document, it is not guaranteed. Also, neither Maritime Matters nor I can be responsible for the content of any external links, which are provided solely for informational purposes.
It is my hope that you will find this list interesting and informative.
